Gunman kills police officer in Basilan

A POLICE officer was shot dead by a lone gunman in Isabela City, Basilan province, an official said Wednesday, April 04.

Superintendent Restituto Pangusban, Isabela City police chief, identified the fatality as Senior Inspector Aristoedes Miranda, the deputy chief for police community relations of the Task Force Basilan.

Pangusban said Miranda was among the more than 50 policemen from the National Capital Region that were assigned last year to Basilan province after they were implicated in illegal drug activities.

The police chief said Miranda was shot and killed at 5:35 a.m. Wednesday along Rizal Avenue in Aguada village, Isabela City.

Pangusban said Miranda was having an early morning jog, his daily routine, when shot once by a lone gunman with a caliber .45 pistol.

He said Miranda, a native of Quiapo, Manila City, sustained a gunshot wound in the head and died instantaneously.

He said an in-depth probe is underway in a bid to identify and arrest the suspect behind the gun slay of Miranda. (SunStar Philippines)
