Medellin entices tourists with unique event

MEDELLIN will host an off-road triathlon event dubbed as Dirt Cross DX Triathlon on April 15 to promote sports tourism and introduce triathlon to the locals.

The 750-meter swim, 25-kilometer bike, and 5K run race will start and end in Kawit, Medellin with about 100 participants. This is the second time that Medellin is hosting a triathlon, following the triathlon last March 2015.

“Last 2015, we showed the athletes the greenery of our place in the road triathlon. This time it’s going to be our mountainside. Aside from the race, the participants can enjoy a lot of activities in our place after the race,” said Medellin Councilor Joevenus Inot in a press conference yesterday.

Local government coordinator Jon Ralph Inot said they want to bring triathlon to the locals and also let the visitors enjoy what Medellin can offer.

“We don’t have a triathlon team yet but we have cyclists and runners. So we hope to form one someday. This event might encourage the locals to try this sport,” said John Ralph.

Race director Quinito Moras of Cornestone Group said it’s going to be a fitting race for those who are racing in the Xterra Danao on April 22 since the route is not that technical.

“This distance is not that long and the course is friendly and not that technical. It’s a good tuneup race for those who are participating in the Xterra Danao,” he said.

“This is the race that is more for fun. It’s early in the season and everyone just came from a break. So it’s ideal to just race and not think about your best time,” he added.

Moras said that Medellin is an ideal spot to host triathlons because it has three routes and the traffic can be diverted to two other routes. The three disciplines will be held in Medellin, with the bike segment covering seven mountain barangays.

Organizers are looking to attract 100 or more athletes. The overall champion will win P10,000; the second placer will get P7,000; and the third placer will get P3,000. (RSC)
