Motorbikers fire at jeepney, kill passenger

A WOMAN alighting from a multicab was fatally hit and two others were injured when two men riding in tandem opened fire at the vehicle in Lapu-Lapu City yesterday.

The motorcyle-riding men had meant to kill the driver of a multicab that was used as a public utility vehicle, police said.

The driver, Romeo Flores, 49, was hit in his left thigh. The passenger beside him, Sherwin Salazar, gott hit in the arm.

Anna Glenn Villaruel, a worker in Mactan Economic Zone 1 in Barangay Ibo, had just got off the multicab when the attack came, at 5:30 a.m. on Lopez Jaena St. in Barangay Poblacion.

Romeo Flores, 49, driver of the multicab, suffered a gunshot wound in his left thigh, while Sherwin Salazar, 32, a passenger sitting beside him, was wounded in his left forearm.

PO3 Lydo Pinos of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office Homicide Section said Flores, president of an association of multicab drivers, could have been in conflict with someone.

Pinos said the motorcyle riders stopped beside Flores as he was unloading passengers.

The backrider pointed a gun at Flores but Flores flicked the weapon with his hand just as the gunman fired.

The bullet hit Villaruel who was alighting from the multicab.

The gunman fired again, hitting Flores this time, and Salazar.

Villaruel, who was on her way to mass at a nearby church, was hit in her left armpit. She died on the spot.

The assailants sped off.

A resident of Sitio San Miguel, Barangay Pusok, Lapu-Lapu City, Villaruel worked at Yuen Thai Philippines in Mactan Economic Zone 1.

Salazar, a resident of Barangay Catarman, Cordova, was treated at a Mactan hospital, while Flores was taken to a hospital in Cebu City.

Pinos said the gunman wore a full-faced helmet and dark sunglasses. Apart from that, investigators had collected no other description of the attackers and the motorcycle they used.
