Magnitude 6 earthquake hits Mindanao areas

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake rocked some areas in Mindanao, including Davao City, Thursday, April 5, with its epicenter located 31 kilometer (km) Southeast of Tarragona, Davao del Norte.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake hit at 11:53 a.m.

The earthquake’s location is at 51 km southeast of Tarragona, Davao Oriental with 040-km depth of focus and tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs said Intensity 4 was felt in Mati City while tremor of intensity 3 was felt in the neighboring cities like Davao City and Cagayan de Oro. Residents in Bislig also experienced an Intensity 1 quake.

Maridel Jamero, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) operator, said in an interview Thursday that they did not receive any information on damages or casualties.

She said that the quake was not strong enough to cause damage on structures. However, she reminded the public to stay alert and be on their toes as aftershocks are expected. The public was also advised to keep monitoring updates.
