Zamboanga ready for ‘Araw ng Kagitingan’ activity

ALL is set for the commemorative activity of the 76th Araw ng Kagitingan on Monday, April 9, in Zamboanga City.

The activity will kick off with a flag raising ceremony at 7 a.m. and followed by a commemorative program at the Freedom Fighters Memorial Shrine along Rizal Street.

Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez, Jr., Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief and incoming Armed Forces chief of staff, and Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar will lead the flag raising and commemorative program.

They will be joined by military and police officials as well as representatives from the Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP) regional chapter.

The local activity is organized by the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) in collaboration with the local government and Zamboanga City Veterans District.

The program is anchored on the theme “Kagitingan at Pagmamahal sa Pilipinas Para sa Tunay na Pagbabago.”

The Araw ng Kagitingan, a regular holiday nationwide, is celebrated as a national memorial day for the brave souls who fought during the Fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942 during the World War II.

It also pays respects and tribute to the many civilian men who died during the tragic Death March from Bataan to Tarlac. (Bong Garcia)
