Summer sans sun

Drive up to the mountains.

THE summer heat is a double-edged sword—on one hand, one need not worry about getting soaked in the rain; but on the other, the blistering heat can be unbearable at times. Some absolutely enjoy this rise in temperature, spending hours outdoors and wallowing under all its glory. But as to each his own, some prefer to avoid the sun as much as they can. To those who would rather spend the dog days in shaded confines, here are some things you can do this summer without having to roast yourself under the sun.

Swim in an indoor pool.

If you love the water but can’t bring yourself to endure the heat, an indoor pool is the perfect compromise! No need to worry about getting sunburn. An economical alternative would be to set up an inflatable pool in a shaded part of your house.

Fly to a cold destination.

While our beautiful country’s summer is in full swing, it’s still pretty much sweater weather someplace else in the world like Japan (cherry blossom season, anyone?). Book a ticket, pack your bags and escape the tropics—temporarily, at least.

Ice skate.

If you can’t afford to travel abroad, head on to SM Seaside City Cebu and have a piece of winter wonderland at the ice skating rink. If you’re a beginner, falling is part of the experience. Enjoy it!

Plan a staycation.

You can book a room at a fancy hotel but you can also enjoy a staycation within the comforts of your own bedroom. Prepare your favorite food. Have some episodes and movies queued and ready. Get in your pajamas and you’re all set for what will be one of the most relaxing days of your life.

Go on a food trip.

If you’re a huge foodie, this will be the perfect activity to do during the summer holidays. You can have the appetizer in one restaurant, the main course in another and then hop off to one more for dessert. You can even mall-hop if there are specific restaurants you want to try in each one.

Hop on a bus.

Go to the nearest bus terminal and hop in an air-conditioned bus, whether south or north bound. The destination doesn’t even have to matter. Take a window seat and just enjoy the journey. Once it reaches its final stop, just board the bus again back to the city.

Stretch and meditate indoors.

Get your Namaste on right in your room. Play some relaxing music, roll out a mat and pose away. It doesn’t even have to be yoga—do what exercise you like best!

Organize a house party with friends.

Invite your besties over for a summer-themed party. Piña coladas, floral shirts, leis, the works! If you can’t go to the beach, bring the beach to you! You can even make it a sleepover for more quality time with your friends.

Drive up to the mountains.

The slight drop in temperature in the late afternoon and evening in higher altitude is a refreshing respite from the heat of the city. Luckily, Cebu is blessed with mountains only a short drive away. Go to a viewpoint in the night time and bask in the starry skies above and the city lights below.
