Cops reminded of gun safety

THE Police Regional office in Davao Region (PRO 11) issued a reminder to its personnel to be careful with their service firearms following an incident where a rookie cop accidentally shot and killed his mother.

"Always treat all guns loaded, never allow the muzzle of any firearm to point at anything you are not willing to destroy, never put your finger near the trigger until you are ready to fire. Do not depend on mechanical device for safety and always be sure of your target and what is behind and in front of it," PRO 11 spokesperson Police Chief Inspector Milgrace Driz said.

These are the four cardinal rules of gun safety, she said.

Last Saturday, Police Officer 1 Emmanuel Dumapig, who is very new in the service, accidentally shot his mother Emma Dumapig while testing his service firearm.

He will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting to parricide as well as an administrative case for grave misconduct in New Corella, Davao del Norte.

Based on the police report, Dumapig was testing his issued handgun while facing the mirror inside their house at Purok 1, Barangay San Roque not knowing that his firearm was loaded.

The gun went off and hit his mother in her chin, causing her death. The victim was rushed to a hospital in Tagum City but she did not make it alive.
