THREE men, including a retired police officer and ex-army, were dead while two others were injured after they were shot by four unidentified men while attending a wake at Crossing Magallon in Barangay Bulad, Isabela, Negros Occidental Monday night.
Police identified the fatalities as Jose Joerito Amable, 50, a retired army; Alejandro Borres, 70, a retired policeman; and Pedirico Bitgue, 30.
Thimoty Arron Achivar, and Alquin Genterula Jr. were wounded.
Chief Inspector Reuben Pajarito, town police chief, said the three fatalities were sitting together in a canopy, occupying half of the road, when the assailants arrived at 6:30 p.m. and fired at them at close range.
The two other injured victims were hit by stray bullets.
The assailants then escaped on board with their two motorcycles.
Pajarito said the three fatalities succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds while Achivar and Genterula were brought to the hospital.
Police recovered from the scene fired bullets and ammunition of .9mm and .45 caliber pistol.
Pajarito said they have yet to know the identities of the perpetrators and they have yet to determine the motive of the incident.
But the police are not discounting the possibility that it was perpetrated by suspected rebels.
The investigation is ongoing.
