DAVAO City Councilor Mabel Acosta is pushing to pass an ordinance that would mandate schools to teach traffic rules and road safety regulations to elementary students.
Acosta, during the Pulong-Pulong ni Pulong media forum yesterday, said she is working on the proposed ordinance that will ensure that children know the ordinances by heart as they grow up.
"The idea is if they are well educated in their younger years as drivers and educators in our future ang mga estudyante na ito, natural lang sa kanila ang mag-follow ng traffic regulations, safety ordinances and overall discipline in the streets yun sana ang gusto natin i-promote," she said.
Acosta added that if these children are not educated, it might be too late. She said drivers now would find ways and argue with traffic enforcers on the rules and regulations of the city.
Acosta said that she had talked with curriculum makers from the Department of Education (Deped).
"I am coordinating with some people in Deped and they already have a draft that is being made, a teaching module kung paano siya i-teach,” she said.
Acosta added that the full module will be good for one and a half hour, and will be incorporated in the social studies subject.
She said they will propose for a proper template so that teachers will all follow the same module.
Acosta said she is yet to propose the ordinance in first reading and she expects that the draft of the module will be tackled well in the committee hearings.
