2 out, 10 in in Gov. Cup basketball

EVERYTHING is set for the opening of the 2nd Cebu Province Inter-City/Municipalities 21-under basketball tournament to be held this Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Cebu Coliseum.

In a press conference yesterday at the Golden Prince Hotel along Archbishop Ave. in Cebu City, Atty. Ramil Abing, executive director of the Cebu Province Sports Commission (CPSC), told reporters that no major change has been made in the tournament, except for some newcomers.

“Compared to last year, we have more participating teams today. And aside from that, there will be a battle for third place this time,” said Abing in a press conference attended by some mayors and representatives from local government units.

Of last year’s 37 participants, only two have decided not to join this year’s edition for different reasons. These are Toledo City and Pilar.

However, nine municipalities and one city that were not able to make it last year are now joining the competition, which is aimed at developing talents in the grassroots level.

At total of 45 LGUs divided into two divisions with four brackets in each group will see action in the tournament that will follow the home-and-away format.

Composing the South Division are Talisay City, Minglanilla, Naga City, San Fernando, Carcar City for Bracket 1; Sibonga, Argao, Dalaguete, Alcoy and Boljoon for Bracket 2; Oslob, Samboan, Santander, Ginatilan, Alegria, Badian for Bracket 3; and Moalboal, Alcantara, Dumanjug, Barili, and Aloguinsan for Bracket 4.

In the North Division, the teams in Bracket 1 are Mandaue City, Cordova, Consolacion, Compostela, Danao City and Carmen; Bracket 2 are San Francisco, Catmon, Poro, Tudela, Sogod and Borbon; Bracket 3 are Tabugon, Tabuelan, City of Bogo, Balamban, Asturias and Tuburan, while Bracket 4 will have Sta. Fe, Bantayan, Madridejos, Daan Bantayan, Medellin and San Remegio.

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale are expected to lead some other Capitol officials in gracing the opening ceremony this Sunday.
