300 participants expected in cross-channel race

SOME 300 triathletes are expected to vie for honors in the Air Asia Durianman, a cross-channel triathlon race in line with the celebration of sports, arts and party brought by the Visit Davao Summer Fest (VDSF) that will kick off this April 29 from Davao City to Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos).

Race director Eustaquio "Stax" Savellano of Triathlon Association of Davao (Triad), who was among the guests of Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the Annex of SM City Davao, said foreign racers from India, Europe and Indonesia will come to compete in the 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run cross-channel race.

"But majority of the participants will come from different cities of the Philippines," he said.

The course swim leg will begin at the Sasa Wharf towards Club Samal Resort for the bike transition. Athletes must finish two loops of bike that will use the road towards PeƱaplata before proceeding a one-loop run on the same road.

Savellano said reigning champion Jonard Saim of Sarangani Province will be defending his title against seeded athletes like Jong Sajulga, Peter Villocino and Tophe Eyao in the men's elite division. En Torres will also try to uphold her crown in the women's elite division.

The champion in both men and women will receive P25,000 while the next two finishers will have P15,000 and P10,000.

More than 15 age groups are entered in this year's edition and to register, visit Air Asia Durianman Triathlon for more information.
