Dionne as Rayna Bulakna

I WAS glad by the choice of Cebuana character actress Dionne Monsanto for the role of Rayna Bulakna in this year’s commemoration of the Kadaugan sa Mactan.

I’m hoping that this development will lead to the recognition of local talents and not just those who are more popular and Manila-based. For the past editions, the celebration banked on the crowd-drawing power of the actors who played the roles of Lapu-Lapu, Magellan, Bulakna and others.

A Facebook post of a tarpaulin poster announcing the temporary closure of the sandbar in Sumilon Island for clean-up and rehabilitation triggered discussions and similar activities.

I captioned the photo as “Oslob’s share in taking care of Mother Nature.” Superbalita picked it up and that started the chain. The activity was the initiative of the Local Government Unit (LGU) under Mayor Jose Tumulak Jr.

My Facebook friends gave positive comments and suggested that a clean-up drive should also be made at the areas near the resorts in the mainland.

So far, the response has been encouraging not only in the municipality but also in the other parts of the province and hopefully in the Vis-Min area too.
