Off-duty cop rescues man from drowning

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - An off-duty policeman, detailed at the Central Luzon Police Regional Office (PRO), has proven his dedication to serve and protect the Filipino people after he saved a man from drowning in Isabela province.

Police Officer 3 Lacson Pataray, member of the Third Regional Mobile Force Battalion in Camp Olivas, rescued 65-year-old Ruel Labog, who was in verge of drowning in Cagayan River after reportedly falling off the bridge in Baranagay San Luis, Cauayan City, Isabela.

PRO-Central Luzon director Amador Corpus said Pataray was onboard a commuter van when he noticed a crowd gathered at Alicaocao Bridge watching a drowning man in the river.

Pataray, who was trained in Search and Rescue operations, then went down the vehicle and immediately jumped-off the bridge to save Labog.

The police officer immediately administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) upon bringing the victim offshore, Chief Superintendent Corpus added.

Corpus said Labog was brought to E.R. Garcia Medical Center in Isabela province by the Cauayan City Rescue Team for proper medical attention.

Corpus commended Pataray for such "humanitarian act" and for embodying the motto of the Philippine National Police (PNP) which is “To Serve and Protect” the public.

“As with any incident that we respond to, the safety of the public is our number one priority and sometimes that means putting them first, ahead of our own safety. Without hesitation, PO3 Pataray dived off a deep and fast moving water and I would like to personally commend his action which is a prime example of why people join the police force – to protect people and make sure they are away from harm,” Corpus said.
