4-vehicle smashup kills 3, injures 5 in Argao

A MAN, his wife and his grandson were killed while five others were injured in a four-vehicle smashup in Sitio Himongbongan, Barangay Taloot in Argao, Southern Cebu yesterday morning.

Jose Aquillo Sellote, 62; his wife, Virgilia, 61; and his grandson Vince Brylle Villaces, 4, didn’t survive their injuries and died in the Dr. Isidro Kintanar Memorial Hospital in Argao after the accident.

Sellote and his companions were on board a multivan and were proceeding toward Cebu City after a vacation in Oslob when, upon passing by Barangay Taloot, they encountered a trailer truck driven by Leonel Judith, who works for a trucking service firm in Mandaue City.

PO1 Jayson Lobendina of the Argao Police Station said that Judith was traveling toward Barangay Binlod in the same town to deliver poultry feeds when Sellote’s car suddenly made a left turn toward his lane.

While Sellote was making a left turn, his vehicle struck the left side of Judith’s truck.

The collision sent Sellote’s vehicle bouncing back to the southbound lane, hitting a gray car driven by Julius Caesar Olivar, 29, who was tailing them.

After his truck was hit by Sellote’s vehicle, Judith lost control of the vehicle and hit an SUV driven by Sulpicio Obod before crashing into a mangrove plantation on the side of the road.

Residents in the area immediately called emergency responders.

While the couple and Villaces didn’t survive the crash, their other four grandchildren survived but remained under medical observation due to their injuries.
Lobendina said Olivar and Obod also survived the accident.

Judith is currently detained at the Argao Police Station. (JKV)
