Baguio City vice mayor nixes Burnham parking

BAGUIO City Vice Mayor Edison Bilog has signified his opposition in the planned construction of a parking facility at Burnham Park.

“I am against the construction of a parking building,” Bilog said admitting that he encouraged people to attend the public consultation.

“There is truth to the contention that I encouraged the people of Baguio to speak up against the construction of a mall in the park and also to attend the public hearing. Ang makikinabang lang dyan ang investor kong ipapatayo yan ng private corporation,” Bilog said.

Bilog added the ordinance for the approval of the implementation of a master development plan for Burnham Park must be passed first before any proposals will be heard.

The vice mayor said he thinks the traffic problem might be worsened if the construction of a mall or parking with commercial spaces in the old auditorium area pushes through.

“Baka imbes na ma-solve natin problema sa traffic e mas lumala. Kung my commercial spaces dyan bka yong parking space e kulang pa sa clients or customer ng mga stalls doon, so, saan mgpark yong mga park goers? Sa kalsada ulit,” added Bilog

Bilog counter proposes the city should rent or buy the GSIS property at the PNR area and make it as a parking facility as well as the slaughterhouse area.

“Kung talagang kailangang magtayo ng parking facility sa Burnham bakit building, hindi ba mas maganda na collapsible parking area,” added Bilog.

Bilog said a collapsible parking is not a permanent structure and can be transferred to another space if needed.

The city official added advocating any structure should be built and run by the government to remove fears of corruption.

“Kapag private magpapatayo, tiyak sasabihin ng tao kaya inapprove kasi may kapalit,” said Bilog.
