More than 100 teams needed for SBP 3x3 brgy edition

THE Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Davao Region is inviting all barangay-based athletes including out-of-school-youth and aspiring basketball players born in year 2000 to join the SBP 3x3 Davao City barangay edition, a qualifier for the SBP 3x3 regional finals set this coming May 6 and 7.

SBP executive program officer Ronel Leuterio bared this during an interview with SunStar Davao Monday at the Royal Mandaya Hotel Kamayo Lounge.

Leuterio said they will cater to as much as 197 teams from the 197 barangays endorsed by Liga ng mga Barangay under Councilor January N. Duterte.

"Twenty teams pa lang so far yung nag-register and we would want more than 100 teams na sumali," the executive program officer said.

"We are doing this for the first time because we wanted to give opportunity for aspiring basketball players including the out-of-school-youth to play in a prestigious league that will qualify them for a bigger competition," the multi-titled coach said.

The free-registration barangay qualifying, however, will kick off this April 23 at the Davao City Recreation Center formerly Almendras Gym, where the regional finals will also be staged.

The top four teams who will emerge in the barangay leg will earn an outright slot to the regional finals for a chance to compete against 28 school-based teams from the region including the participants of the just-concluded Escandor Cup 2018 Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Interested teams may register at the Liga ng mga Barangay office during office hours.

Birth certificate is required to prove that the player is born in 2000.

Deadline of submission is on Wednesday, April 18.

The regional finals champion, meanwhile, will represent Davao Region to the upcoming SBP 3x3 National Finals slated on the third week of May in Manila.
