City engineer halts SM Strata construction

ILOILO City Engineer Roberto Divinagracia said he will heed the recommendation to stop the construction of the SM Strata building in Mandurriao district for lack of safety measures.

Divinagracia told the media after the flag ceremony at the Iloilo City Hall on Monday, April 16, that the stoppage order would cover the installation of glass panels.

On April 14, two cars were damaged after being hit by debris from the glass panels.

Earlier, 16-year-old barker Sam Johncel Villegas lost his right foot after an equipment fell from the building.

Jeck Conlu, head of the Public Safety and Management Office that recommended a halt to the project, said there is no timetable as to when construction may resume.

“Maybe until they can organize their safety measures and ensure it,” Conlu said.
Divinagracia said he will meet with the contractor of the building to discuss safety measures.

“Next time, there should be a cover on the road. They should put up a canopy,” he said. (Carolyn Jane Abello)
