San Simon village now free WIFI zone

SAN SIMON -- Residents of this fourth district town can now access internet for free in the metro plaza area through the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s (DICT) “Pipol Konek” program.

This was bared by Mayor Leonora Wong, saying this town’s Barangay San Jose is one of the pilot beneficiaries of the DICT program which aims to provide free internet connectivity in selected public places across the country.

The free internet connectivity can be accessed in the Metro Plaza area, particularly in the San Simon Public Market and San Jose Sports Complex which is considered a place of convergence of Simonians, said Wong.

To connect, users must simply open their WIFI on their smart phones and tablets and connect to Free Public Wifi-Pipol Konek network to enjoy 256 kbps data speed connection, which is the lowest prevailing speed requirement for “broadband” service.

However, a data volume based Fair Usage Policy shall also be implemented to promote an equitable distribution of the public service.

“This is good news for Simonians, having free WIFI in Barangay San Jose which can be accessed anytime for our productivity especially for work and research of students,” Wong said.

Wong reminded Simonians to practice responsible use of the internet especially on their respective social media accounts, as well as monitor the websites being visited by the youth.

“Not because WIFI is now it could be used for anything. Technology is beneficial until we abuse it, so we must be responsible netizens,” Wong added.

The DICT’s Pipol Konek project aims to accelerate the government’s efforts in enhancing Internet accessibility for Filipinos to boost economic, social and educational opportunities and in reducing the growing “digital divide” under the overarching e-Filipino Program of the DICT.

The project is initially intended for 748 plazas of Class 4, 5 and 6 municipalities, but was later on expanded to public spaces in public schools, libraries, government hospitals and rural heath units, and possibly others, in all municipalities Class 3 and in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao, as well as other cities that will serve as distribution points or Points of Presence shall also be included.
