Ched awaits amendments of BCC ordinance for accreditation

THE Commission on Higher Education (Ched)-Western Visayas is still awaiting the amendments of Bacolod City College (BCC) ordinance for its accreditation so that students under the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act can avail themselves of free tuition.

Ched-Western Visayas Director Cesar Medina said Tuesday, April 17, that he will meet with BCC Administrator Johanna Bayoneta Wednesday, April 18, to discuss its accreditation.

“BCC, like other local colleges in Western Visayas, is already compliant. We already issued the certificate of program compliance of the five-degree programs being offered by BCC so, in legal parlance, BCC has the authority to offer a degree program,” he said.

“What we lack now is the institutional government recognition to being included in free tuition,” he added.

Medina said he is hopeful BCC can submit the amendments of BCC ordinance before the deadline on April 20.

The Bacolod City Council earlier passed on first reading the amendment.

The amendment is part of the requirements to secure an accreditation so BCC can provide free tuition.

Bacolod Representative Greg Gasataya said he is coordinating with BCC to comply all the requirements.

He said BCC should submit the amendments to BCC ordinance and its master plan so Ched will release the institutional recognition to avail the free tuition program.

“We should fast-track the submission of the requirements because Ched is also very positive that BCC will be included in free tuition,” he added.
