Escalante sees close fight between Lacson, Ferrer

SECOND District Board Member Salvador Escalante said he sees a neck and neck fight between reelectionist Negros Occidental Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and his challenger outgoing Fourth District Representative Jeffrey Ferrer.

Escalante's statement is based on his calculation that the First District is with Lacson because he is from the area and has served as mayor of San Carlos City.

The Second District, the bailiwick of Ferrer’s runningmate Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., would definitely go in favor of Ferrer while the Third District would go for Lacson because of the support of Representative Alfredo Benitez for him.

The Fourth District will definitely go for Ferrer where he serves as congressman for his third and final term. The Fifth District is also expected to go for him with the support of Representative Alejandro Mirasol. The Sixth District is seen to support Lacson since Representatives Mercedes Alvarez belongs to the vice governor’s party Love Negros.

"Being the secretary-general of the United Negros Alliance (Unega) of course, I pray for the success of our candidates. We will also campaign for Congressman Jeffrey but that does not mean that we will take lightly Vice Govenor Bong. He is the incumbent vice governor and he has resources to launch a province-wide campaign," Escalante said.

He said that election is politics, and once a candidate has a challenger, he or she should not take the opponent lightly so that at least at the end of the election, “you've done your best, win or lose.”

"I believe there is a tight fight between the two but we have the upper hand," Escalante said.

He noted that Unega has the support of several incumbent mayors because Love Negros did not field candidates against them, but there are also areas where Love Negros mayors are unopposed.

Escalante also confirmed that the governor has been meeting with barangay captains especially if they go to his office to ask for projects.

“Although the governor is unopposed, the barangays captains are granted with the projects they are asking for," he added.
