IN TODAY’S highly competitive world, uniqueness and innovation can put a company head and shoulders above its rivals.
One such company is Oryspa. Based in Laguna, Oryspa has reinvented the rice bran, which usually goes to waste after the hulling process, into a successful skin-care line.
Because Laguna is a rice-growing province, the bran, known locally as tipasi, is never in short supply. And Sherill Quintana capitalized on this abundance in conceiving Oryspa in 2007.
The oil extracted from rice bran has a potent antioxidant and a skin-whitening component.
The company's name is a combination of the scientific name of rice, oryza sativa, and spa.
Five years after Oryspa started marketing its first batch of products, the firm has gained a huge following.
Seeing its huge potential, a couple from Davao City, Kristoffer and Elvie Mae Ang, acquired the first-ever Oryspa franchise in Mindanao.
The company, Kristoffer said, started with spa solutions and expanded to bath and body care, facial care, and baby care products.
"The reason why we franchised is because this is something new," he said. Oryspa products were first introduced during Christmas bazaars. The company opened a store at SM Lanang Premier on February 18, 2015.
Kristoffer said he was surprised to learn that Oryspa already has a following in the city. "They buy Oryspa through online shops," he said.
An organic advocate, Kristoffer plans to market Oryspa spa solutions to the local spas.
"Some of these spas are using synthetic oils which can be harmful," he said.
"There's a lot of organic products here, but Oryspa is the first and the finest rice bran-based because it's backed up by science," he said.
