Lapu officials dedicate ‘Kadaugan’ to Pacquiao

CEBU CITY -- Aside from paying tribute to Datu Lapu-Lapu, this year’s reenactment of the Battle of Mactan is also dedicated to boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, who will have the biggest fight of his career less than a week after the mock battle, the event’s organizer said.

Damian Gomez Jr., organizer of the reenactment, said the City supports Pacquiao in his upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas, USA on May 2 (May 3 in Philippines).

“Pacquiao once played Lapu-Lapu in our reenactment of the Kadaugan sa Mactan (Victory of Mactan). We are dedicating this year’s reenactment to him. We pray he will win the fight,” Gomez said in a recent press conference.

For this year’s mock battle, actors Vin Abrenica and Joseph Bitangcol were eyed to take the roles of Lapu-Lapu and foreign invader Ferdinand Magellan, respectively.

Miss Earth 2014 Jamie Herrell, a resident of Lapu-Lapu City, will play Reyna Bulakna, Lapu-Lapu’s wife.

In 2008, Pacquaio played Lapu-Lapu while his wife Jinkee took the role of Reyna Bulakna. Actor Dennis Trillo played Magellan.

The reenactment is held on April 27 every year in Mactan Liberty Shrine, the site where Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan on April 27, 1521.

“Nobody among us witnessed the battle. The reenactment will reflect what happened. But we make artistic twists so it won’t be boring,” Gomez said.

Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr. of the Presidential Communications Operations Office will be the event’s guest speaker.

Malacañang declared April 27, 2015, a Monday, a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City for the commemoration of the Battle of Mactan.

More activities are lined up this year for the commemoration of the Battle of Mactan, organizers said.

The festivities started last Friday with the opening of the Kadaugan sa Mactan Food Festival in Mactan Liberty Shrine.

The City allocated P5 million for the two-week celebration, whose highlights include the reenactment of the April 27, 1521 battle and the three-night street party.

A longer stretch of road will be closed for the Rampada street dancing competition on April 26 and the Kadaugan Street Party, which will run from April 24 to 26.

The street dancing and street party will extend up to the Hoopsdome in Barangay Gun-ob. (RSB/Sun.Star Cebu)
