WOMEN'S Party-list Gabriela in Southern Mindanao described Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's recent pronouncement in public of being a womanizer as "sexist and derogatory."
Gabriela Davao secretary general Mary Ann Sapar said they uphold the position of the Gabriela National Alliance and Gabriela Women's Party that Duterte bragging about his being a womanizer in public is an affront to women.
She said the city mayor's strong support for the women's movement in the city does not make him above criticisms on the issue of sexism. She added that Gabriela never hesitated to criticize Duterte for his sexist campaign forays.
"He does not have to resort to sexism to gain popularity in the poll for he is way ahead of the others. He does not have to use expletives in public for his messages are clear and distinct," Sapar said.
The group appealed to Duterte to stop hurting women for the sake of being popular and instead urged him to stick to meaningful and significant issues.
"During the One Billion Rising campaign early this year, he made a speech devoid of expletives. We encouraged him to maintain that decorum at all times," Sapar said.
She said they will pursue people's interest and continue to gender police, to defend and advance the gains that the women's movements in the country have achieved in terms of elimination of discrimination and violence against women.
