Pimentel says PDP-Laban won’t back Dongkoy

THE Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) is not inclined to back the mayoralty bid of ex-mayor Vicente ‘Dongkoy’ Emano even after Emano said he is open to conducting talks with the party’s bet for President, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

“Kung ang party ang pabut-on it will not support Dongkoy but if there is a suggestion from Mayor Duterte, we will look into it,” Senator Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III, PDP-Laban head, said.

Pimentel said PDP-Laban is not fielding a candidate for city mayor in next year’s polls. It has also not decided whom to support, he said.

“Kaniadto pwede ra kami mamili but now nga naa na mi candidates for president and vice president, we are coordinating with the party labi na kay wala mi automatic choice for mayor sa CDO kay wala mi candidate,” Pimentel said.

But Pimentel, who ran and lost against Emano in 2001, said the party will likely not back Emano, a friend of Duterte. Adding that it would be awkward to support Emano considering their involvement in the anti-Emano campaign in 2013.

Pimentel said the party is looking for a candidate who advocates Federalism and who has a strong anti-criminality program.

Pimentel also refused to give his personal choice between re-electionist City Mayor Oscar Moreno and 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez.

“We go for party consultation and preference, may time pa naman,” he said.

Pimentel said Moreno was once a member of PDP-Laban and Rodriguez’s Centrist Democratic Party (CDP) also advocates federalism.

Pimentel made the comments in reaction to an earlier statement by Emano who said he is open to a dialogue with Duterte.

Emano’s Padayon Pilipino Party is an ally of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) which is fielding Vice President Jejomar Binay for the Presidency in the 2016 polls.

But Emano had said he is awaiting the decision of the Commission on Elections on Duterte’s candidacy.
