Jeepney drivers stage transport holiday to protest LTFRB order

A GROUP of public utility drivers staged Monday a transport holiday in Taguig City to protest an order of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to phase out jeepneys aged 15 years old and above.

Efren de Luna, national president Alliance of Concerned Transport (Acto), said that LTFRB and the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) must have sought their advice before implementing the new rule.

"They must have consulted jeepney drivers regarding their plan as they would be the ones affected once the rule is implemented," Luna said.

Although the group is not against modernization, Luna said that the LTFRB must have clear reasons and standards in phasing out old jeepneys.

Aside from their protests, Acto urged LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez and LTO Chairman Alfonso Tan to resign.

"They are the makers of transport laws against the poor," Luna said.

The protest ended before 7 a.m. after LTFRB showed desire to speak with the transport group to settle the issues. (Sunnex)
