Kaplag commemorative book, stamps launched

THE Order of St. Augustine in Cebu unveiled Monday with the help of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost), the commemorative book and stamps in celebration of the 450th anniversary of the finding of the image of Sto. Nino.

The launching, held at SM City Cebu, was attended by the editor of the book, Fr. Czar Emmanuel V. Alvarez, and some of the contributors, namely, Fr. Harold Rentoria, OSA, Myrna Garrido, Mary Kathryn Joy Vargas, and Fr. Eusebio Berdon, OSA.

The book, entitled "Kaplag 2015: A Commemorative Book," has 193 pages and features 131 photos out of the 13,000 submitted to the editor.

It also contains 12 selected and well-documented articles on various topics, such as those concerning the history of the Sto. Niño devotion, the early Augustinian missions in the Philippines, and the Augustinian legacy, among others.

Kaplag 2015 also contains a number of messages from religious and political authorities in the Philippines and abroad. Among those are messages from President Benigno Aquino III, Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto (the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines), Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, Fr. Alejandro Moral Anton (the prior general of the Order of St. Augustine), Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines president Archbishop Socrates Villegas, Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, National Commission for Culture and the Arts chairman Felipe De Leon Jr., and National Historical Commission chairperson Maria Serena Diokno.

"It is hoped that the inclusion of all these articles in the commemorative book of Kaplag 2015 would not only help us deepen our understanding of the origins of our faith (particularly of our devotion to the Child Jesus) and the vital role it place in our lives, but also help us understand our identity as a people, what makes us distinct and different, and discern the special mission that God is calling us to fulfill in the world today as part of the biggest Catholic nation in Asia," said Fr. Alvarez.

The commemorative book will be available at the SM City Cebu Art Center during the 450 Kaplag Painting Exhibit, which will open Tuesday, April 21. It will only be available at the Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño after the exhibit. Only 500 copies were printed and each copy costs P1,500.

Aside from the book, also launched Monday are the Kaplag commemorative stamps that are embossed with 21K gold ink. The PHLPost has printed 30,000 copies of the souvenir stamps that cost P200 each.

The stamp design features the official logo of the Sto. Niño Anniversary Committee and was designed by PHLPost in-house artist Rodine Teodoro. (Ojharra Catherine Manlosa and Pia Noreen Bilar, CNU CommArts Interns and Grace Ann Gonzales, NORSU Mass Comm Intern/Sunnex)
