Cagayan de Oro: Growing Mindanao fashion community

CAGAYAN de Oro has now become a growing Mindanao fashion community.

On its 4th Mindanao Fashion summit, the Oro Fashion Designers Guild (OFDG) and Designers Assembly held the summit at Limketkai Center Rotunda from December 10 to 12, 2015.

In its opening day on December 10, all Mindanaoan fashion collection was showcased by Oro designers, both the up and coming as well as established names in the industry. Participating designers included Allan Sajulga, Ann Semblante, Angela Soriano, Benjie S. Manuel, Gil Macaibay III, John Mark Magallanes, Joshua Guibone, Juniel Doring, and Mark Christopher Yaranon.

On that same day, designers Manuel, Macaibay, Guibone, Magallanes, Doring and Yaranon presented a separate collection featuring only the menswear. The Ororama Orange Collection was also featured after the two shows.

On the second day, aside from the Fashion Institute of the Philippines Designers show, guest designers from outside the City of Golden Friendship also got a chance to present their collections. Designers Jermaine Nabong from Iligan City, and Butuanons Klevin Bartolaba and Aloha Begin showed their designs and their forecasts for 2016.

“We try to encourage everyone to participate, not only members of OFDG but also upcoming designers and students from the different fashion schools,” said Manuel, the founding president of OFDG.

The MFS serves as an avenue not only Kagay-anon designers but also those from all over Mindanao to showcase their talents and skills. Designers from Davao were also invited to present their designs but were unable to come.

Yaranon, OFDG president, added, “It’s important that we hold events like this so that we get to promote our designs, it’s one way for the public to know who we are and for us to attract clients.”

The Spring and Summer Gala show, which marked the end of MFS for this year, was a spectacular extravaganza of creative and beautiful clothes. Featured designers gave Kagay-anons a glimpse of what’s in store for 2016. Models in vibrant colored plains and prints as well unique patterns and fabrics walked the catwalk to the delight of mall goers.

“Each designer showcased his or her own forecast for spring and summer of 2016,” said Yaranon adding, “For me, it’s all about my inspiration. Mine is psychedelic, black and white, which was inspired by the graffiti art which I saw in New York City when I visited last August.”

“We have to promote the local industry,” said Manuel adding, “This event helps promote us globally, especially here in Mindanao and all over the country. It also allows for the promotion of livelihood.” OFDG has been conducting seminars and trainings in basic sewing, dressmaking, beadwork and embroidery for the communities of the city especially for the differently-abled. They have been sharing their knowledge with the goal of providing underprivileged individuals skills to help them find employment. They have also been active in the enhancement of local fabrics which they have promoted internationally during their US and Canada shows.

The event was directed by MJ Bacayo, Robbie Pamisa, and Dennis Almazan.
