BENGUET farmers have shipped 2.5 million kilos of vegetables from Saturday to Tuesday as they try to keep out with bulk orders for the Christmas holiday.
Benguet Farmers Marketing Cooperative (BFMC) Executive Manager Augusta Balanoy said the rush of orders is expected because lowland market vendors want to sell their produce within the days.
“Pag kasi nahuli sila sa market, di na mabenta,” Balanoy said.
Benguet provides 80 percent of the country’s vegetable needs.
Vegetable purchases reached 11 tons, Balanoy said.
Cabbage, carrots, potatoes and sayote make up the bulk of produce from the Cordillera region.
As many as 140 trucks haul vegetables from the Benguet Trading Post mainly to Metro Manila.
