Cops secure mining site in Sipalay City

A TEAM from the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) has been deployed to secure a post in the former Maricalum Mining Corp. site in Barangay San Jose, Sipalay City in the wake of the tension that followed the serving of writ of possession to the facility Wednesday.

Senior Supt. Samuel Nacion, officer-in-charge of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Noppo), said on Thursday that the sheriff from the Department of Labor of Employment (Dole) arrived with security guards and some former mine workers, but they encountered resistance from security men of the new owner JG Summit Holdings.

The sheriff and the group who came with him were told that “there's no more Maricalum,” the Noppo chief said.

Nacion said policemen were deployed to pacify both parties to avoid any untoward incident.

“The police secured the area because it's our job. We have to ensure peace and order,” he added.

Superintendent Luisito Acebuche, chief of Sipalay City Police Station, said in a radio interview that they have a detachment in the area, and their personnel are assisting the team from RPSB in securing the site.

The policemen are deployed at Post No. 2 located at the entrance going to the plant, he said.

Maricalum Mining was shut down more than 10 years ago due to labor issues, but the Dole had recently ordered its sheriff to identify the mine’s remaining property worth about P159 million which can be sold and used as payment for its former employees.
