A NEWS team of ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao based in Iligan City was ambushed at Banggolo in Marawi City around 12:40 p.m. Saturday.
In an interview, Ronnie Enderes, ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao reporter, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro by phone that the team was on field to follow up the story on another power pylon toppled by some unidentified armed men in Lanao, Ramain in Marawi City in the evening of December 25.
Enderes, was covering together cameraman Emelito Balansag and team driver Gary Montecillo, when the ambushed happened.
Enderes said that when his team was on its way to Iligan City from Ramain two motorcycles were tailing them.
“We noticed the two motorcycles with two men riding in each following us and so Montecillo sped but the motorcycles kept on chasing us until we reached Banggolo where two gunshots were fired at the driver's side," Enderes said.
Banggolo is Marawi’s town center teeming with businesses and people.
Report from the police shows that the attackers used .45 caliber pistol after retrieving two bullets at the crime scene.
“Thank God, none of us was hurt but we could not describe the trauma we’ve experienced after that incident," Enderes said.
"We thank the News Safety Training conducted by National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) earlier for it has helped us a lot to survive that hostile situation. The scenarios during the news safety training became a reality after all,” Enderes added.
Enderes is the outgoing chairperson of NUJP Iligan-Lanao del Norte chapter.
The NUJP Iligan-Lanao del Norte chapter condemned the attempt on the lives of the ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao news team.
The NUJP is urging the military and the Philippine National Police to act immediately identify and hunt the attackers.
At press time, the police do not have any identities yet on the group behind the disruption of the peace and order in Marawi City.
