Baguio Fire department launches signature drive against fireworks

THE Baguio fire department has begun a signature campaign supporting a total ban on fireworks and pyrotechnic devices in the city.

“Itong Oplan Lagda natin patungkol sa total ban ng firecrackers at pyrotechnic devices ay makakatulong sa pag iwas natin sa mga maaring mangyaring sakuna,” City Fire Marshall Supt. Joe Fernand Bagyod told Sun*Star Baguio.

Bagyod said the department has collected more than 5,000 signatures.

“The signatures will prove that there are supporters of no to fireworks and pyrotechnic devices in the City, this will be an evidence na ihaharap natin sa council para makagawa na sila ng batas patungkol sa total ban ng paputok sa City,” Bangyod said.

He said a total ban will never be implemented unless there is a supporting law against fireworks usage.

In an earlier press conference Mayor Mauricio Domogan said there is a resolution in the council banning the sale of fireworks but not its use.

“Meron na tayong existing resolution to prohibit selling of fireworks pero yung paggamit wala pa kaya kailangan pa natin ng legal basis for a zero firecracker injury in the City,” Bangyod said.

Eight firecracker-related injuries have been recorded in Baguio as of December 28.
