Don’t campaign during Sinulog, politicos told

ORGANIZERS of the 2016 Sinulog Festival warned politicians not to conduct sorties during the weeklong celebration.

In a press conference yesterday, Ricky Ballesteros, Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director, said politicians will be reprimanded and their campaign materials will be removed if they attempt to hold sorties during any of the Sinulog activities.

Ballesteros told reporters they will strictly monitor and prohibit politicians who will try to use this year’s Sinulog as a platform for their campaign.

“They should behave during the Sinulog. They are welcome, they can watch the Sinulog. But if we see them shaking hands on the parade route or even posting their propaganda, we will have no choice but to remove them,” he said.

He said they know it’s election next year, but they’re discouraging campaigning during the Sinulog to keep the festival clean of any politicking.

Anna Conejeros, Sinulog 2016 marketing head, urged Cebuanos to keep the Sinulog peaceful and without any hitches, considering that the festival is already known in the international scene.

Bad light

She lamented that reports of public drunkenness and color-pelters during the Sinulog placed the festival in a bad light.

For this year, organizers are coordinating with local police to put up a temporary detention cell for drunks causing trouble during the festival.

Color-pelting has also been prohibited, especially within the vicinity of the carousel route.

Street parties and the selling of liquor in the parade route are also prohibited.

Chief Insp. David Señor of the Cebu City Police Office said around 3,000 policemen will be deployed around the city to secure both the Sinulog Festival and the 51st International Eucharistic Congress.

Señor said that they will be using the same security template that was used during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Ballesteros announced that seven out-of-town contingents have confirmed their participation in next year’s Sinulog Festival.

He also said there are 10 contingents each for the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan and the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan.
