ONLINE classified listing OLX Philippines reported an improvement in Cebuanos’ acceptance of online selling.
From 43,874 unique listers (irregular sellers) in Cebu in 2014, Regina Aguilar, OLX Philippines senior marketing manager for Cebu, said the figure grew by 100 percent, ending 2015 with 106,766 unique listers.
Of the 106,766 irregular sellers, average monthly active sellers last year stood at 20,422.
Aguilar said this improvement means Cebuanos are starting to embrace the concept of online selling. She said that if not for the slow Internet connection, which is still the top challenge in getting people to the online selling stream, these figures would likely go up.
Other challenges noted by the company is the Filipino culture of being too attached to things, especially those that have sentimental value, and fear of online scams.
Top five categories mostly posted online by sellers are mobile phone and tablets, real estate, clothing/accessories, cars and automotives, and computers.
However, car/automotives and pets are the most in-demand commodities by buyers.
Surprisingly, Aguilar said the most active sellers are Cebuano dads. She surmised that most women tend to be too attached to things.
Yesterday, OLX Philippines launched its Biliba Campaign with Cebuano personalities to further promote online buying and selling of second-hand items.
Cebu’s “Biliba!”, the company said, is the localized version of the national “Naks, Naman!” campaign that was rolled out in November last year.
“The campaign aims to praise and celebrate the smart ways or diskarte of people from all walks of life in moving their lives forward. OLX Philippines wants to encourage and empower the people to be smart, practical and positive,” said Aguilar.
OLX Philippines Cebu brand ambassadors who are also OLX-users are TV hosts Blinky de Leon and Phoebe Kaye Fernandez and bloggers Doyzkie Buenviaje and Toni Pino-Oca.
“I love traveling. But traveling entails cost. So, I really save for it. I have an old laptop that is still in tiptop shape so I posted it on OLX just to see if someone would still buy it. An hour after somebody called and wanted to check the gadget. She fell in love with it and went home happy after our meet up. I went home happy as well,” said Buenviaje, a lifestyle blogger.
