Parantac to miss PNG Nationals

DANIEL Parantac will be sitting out in the upcoming Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Olympic Committee National Games later this year.

The Southeast Asian Games wushu gold medalist earlier announced he will be resting from the sport after suffering medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury prior to his participation in the 28th SEA Games in Singapore June of 2015.

The 24-year-old Bontoc, Mt. Province native said he will take a year’s leave of absence from national and international competitions after going through surgery going back from the said event.

Despite the fall-back, Parantac promised to return in 2017 with hopes of continuing his career as part of the Philippine National Team.

Although sidelined by injury, the University of the Cordilleras alumnus said he will still be helping train other younger wushu athletes based in the city to reinforce Baguio’s bid in continuing to produce internationally competitive martial art practitioners.

Meanwhile City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said the Parantac’s absence will be a big loss for the city, who has been consistent as the country’s top wushu producing players in the country.

According to the city official, they wish Parantac a speedy recovery from his injury and hopes more wushu athletes will step up in his place.

“We cannot do anything about that, he really needs to heal and rest. On the other hand we are optimistic this will give other wushu entries for the PNG to take the lead.” Gonzales said.

“Perhaps the Baguio Wushu Team will still lead the city in this event despite the absence of one of our key players,” he added.

During the 2015 PNG National Finals, out of the 59 gold, 61 silver, and 53 bronze medals, wushu accounted for 16-15-7.
