‘The Revenant’ wins major awards at the 73rd Golden Globes

THE Revenant had a good day yesterday at the 73rd Golden Globes winning major awards—best picture-drama, best director for Alejandro Iñarritu and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, his third. Iñarritu was so surprised by the win, he didn’t have words. When he took the stage with the other The Revenant producers, Iñarritu waved off giving a speech. But he already had his moment when he earlier won the trophy for best director, besting awards season favorite 78-year-old Ridley Scott who directed The Martian.

DiCaprio got a standing ovation when he received his best actor trophy. “I wanna share this award to all the first nations people represented in this film. To all the indigenous communities around the world, it is time that we recognize your history and we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people out there that would exploit them. It is time that we heard your voice and protect this planet for future generations,” DiCaprio said in his speech that went over the time limit given by the Golden Globes.

But DiCaprio was not the only one who defied the time limit. Ridley Scott, whose film The Martian won best picture-musical or comedy, read three pages of notes when he accepted the award. He reproached the person telling him to wrap up multiple times and read his entire note even when the music on the background played on.

Despite controversy over its nomination in the comedy category when the film didn’t have hard-hitting humor, its star Matt Damon also won best actor-comedy. Damon said it has been 18 years since he first won a Golden Globes for Good Will Hunting, which he co-wrote with Ben Affleck. “I was here 18 years ago… With a little more context, I know how lucky I am to do this for a living.” It may have been a great speech but the most memorable Matt Damon moment was his reaction to host Ricky Gervais’ joke while introducing him as “the only person Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to.” The joke was in reference to Affleck allegedly cheating on his wife Jennifer Garner with a nanny.

There were also a couple of reunions that got people talking during breaks from the ceremony. There was DiCaprio chatting with his two-time co-star Kate Winslet, who was also the night’s first winner with her performance in Steve Jobs. She took home best supporting actress. Jennifer Lawrence, winner for best actress-comedy for her film Joy, was also snapped talking with ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hoult.

The hottest moment of the night was when Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling introduced their film The Big Short as one of the nominees for best picture-comedy. Gosling wasn’t happy to introduce the film with Pitt, thinking he would be doing it himself. Gosling was just playing, of course. But it was a funny skit that People magazine declared they should be next year’s hosts.

Host Ricky Gervais didn’t disappoint. Most of his jokes were a hit. According to Entertainment Weekly magazine, NBC didn’t give Gervais restrictions to his jokes. As usual, he had a beer in hand while hosting. “It’s right that NBC hosts this award show because they’re the only network that are truly fair and impartial and that’s because they’re the only network with zero nominations,” Gervais said. He also introduced the first presenters Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill and questioned why there were in the Golden Globes when they have never won. Hill went on stage with a bear hat, claiming to be the bear in The Revenant.

Brie Larson, hailed as one of the best dressed celebrities on the red carpet, also slayed the Golden Globes competition, winning best actress-drama for Room. Larson is a Golden Globes virgin. It was her first nomination and first win. There were many other Golden Globes virgins especially in the television category. Gael Garcia Bernal got his first nomination and award for best actor-comedy for Mozart in the Jungle. So did his counterpart Rachel Bloom who won best actress-comedy for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Veteran actress Maura Tierney was the same, winning best supporting actress-drama for The Affair.

Lady Gaga may be a veteran singer but the best actress-limited series trophy for American Horro Story: Hotel she received yesterday was her first acting award. In her speech, she said: “I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer. But music worked out first.” Sam Smith also won his first Globes for Writings on the Wall, the theme song for the latest James Bond movie Spectre.

What is an awards show without a Steve Harvey parody? Jamie Foxx, who presented the award for best original score, announced that the winner was Straight Outta Compton, which wasn’t even nominated. The award went to The Hateful Eight. Foxx then blamed the card, which Harvey did when he flubbed the Miss Universe 2015 announcement of the winner. Foxx also introduced his daughter Corinne as Miss Golden Globes 2016.

Other highlights include Aziz Ansari seemingly reading a book Losing to Jeffrey Tambor with Dignity during the announcement of nominees for best actor-comedy. The award went to Bernal, though, not Tambor. When Taraji P. Henson won best actress-drama for her role as Cookie Lyons in Empire, she gave out cookies to other celebrities she passed through on her way to the stage.

Tom Hanks also presented Denzel Washington the Cecil B. Demille award.

Other winners for movie include: Sylvester Stallone (Creed) for best supporting actor, Aaron Sorkin (Steve Jobs) for best screenplay, Inside Out for best animated film and Hungary’s Son of Saul for best foreign film. Awards favorite Spotlight didn’t win anything.

For television, the other winners are: Mr. Robot, best drama series; Mozart in the Jungle, best comedy series; Wolf Hall, best TV movie or mini-series; Oscar Isaac (Show Me a Hero), best actor TV movie or mini-series; Jon Hamm (Mad Men), best actor-drama and Christian Slate (Mr. Robot), best supporting actor TV movie or mini-series.
