Tarpaulin war erupts in Iloilo City

RESIDENTS Iloilo City are closely watching the word war over tarpaulins depicting some indecent exposures against former friends and allies and now bitter enemies in the person of Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Councilor Plaridel Nava.

The tarpaulin war erupted last Tuesday morning, after a 2x3 feet tarpaulin depicting Nava allegedly admitting he is an adulterer during the December Senate hearing here presided by Senator Grace Poe.

Nava’s father, punong barangay Sumakwel Nava of Barangay Libertad, Lapuz district, responded by installing two tarpaulins, in front and at the back of his vehicle, showing a picture of the City Mayor holding a jumbo hotdog in defense of his son.

On Thursday morning, at least 12 tarpaulins depicting Nava as an adulterer were discovered along the major Iznart and JM Basa streets.

These were immediately dismantled and a team was gathered from City Hall headed by the City Mayor’s new spokesman, lawyer Mark Piad.

The lawyer said that the City Mayor deplored the tarpaulin war and appealed for a high level of campaign and politics in the city.

Piad reiterated the statement of Mabilog who said “I do not entertain below the belt and personal attacks on any person. Much more use this for political purposes. I stand by my performance and programs benefitting the City and the Ilonggos. We are all mature and intelligent. I appeal for high level of campaign and politics in the City of Iloilo.”

Mabilog is running for reelection under the Liberal Party while Nava is seeking reelection as City Councilor under the opposition United Nationalist Party.
