Papal legate to visit, interact with inmates

THE Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) will have a 4 p.m. mass and performance today.

Archbishop Charles Maung Cardinal Bo of Yangon, Myanmar, papal legateof the 51st International Eucharistic Congress, will not only watch the inmates dance, but he will also interact with them, said Fr. Jan Limchua.

Limchua, a Cebuano priest who serves as protocol officer for the papal legate, told reporters that aside from officiating the event’s opening mass, Bo will also serve as the main celebrant for the Statio Orbis at the South Road Properties on Sunday.

Dialogue

Limchua said that the inmates will perform their famous dance to the theme of the 51st IEC during the visit.

Bo will then hold a dialogue with them, he said.

Aside from CPDRC, Bo will also visit the Don Bosco Youth Center (DBYC) in Barangay Pasil, Cebu City on Thursday.

Limchua said that Bo included DBYC in his itinerary because he is also a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB).

Bo also has an affinity for the poor, whom he continues to encounter even in his own turf, he said.

The DBYC will organize a traditional Sinulog dance to welcome Bo.

Appointments

Back in January last year, Pope Francis appointed the 66-year-old prelate as the first cardinal of Myanmar.

Born in Monhla Village, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, Bo was ordained as a priest of the SDB on April 19, 1976.

As cardinal of Myanmar, Bo often focuses on national reconciliation, peace, justice and freedom.

Last April, Pope Francis appointed Bo as a member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

He is also a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture.
