IN efforts to form a competitive line-up the soonest possible time, the Cebu Landmasters is calling for a tryout for players who want to be part of the team’s campaign in the inaugural Countrywide Basketball League (CWBL) in March.
The Bogo City-based Landmasters is opening doors to hopefuls who want to continue their basketball career in a high-profile tournament where games are aired live in ABS-CBN Sports + Action channel.
The Joe Soberano-owned Landmasters will hold a tryout at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) gym on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m.
“We will give the opportunity to Cebuano players to play in a high-caliber tournament such as the CWBL. We are a Cebuano team, owned by a Cebuano businessman, Joe Soberano, and will have our homecourt in Bogo City. So as much as possible, we will hire Cebuano players. I hope many Cebuano players will come and join the tryout on Saturday. After all this is their team,” Landmasters head coach Jun Tan told Sun.Star Cebu.
Among those who are expected to join the tryouts are University of San Carlos Warriors alumni Charles Pepito, Nico Magat and William McAloney, former University of Cebu Webmaster shooter Moncrief Rogado and former University of the Visayas players Phil Mercader, Alfred Codilla, Franz Arong, and John Abad among others.
Tan and his assistants Hermes Sumalinog and Armand Colina have been putting their heads together to come up with an ideal line-up that would take the Landmasters to places.
The CWBL will open doors in the first week of March with eight teams to see action in an eight-month-long nationwide tournament.
CWBL required no age limit and also allowed former PBA players to play in the tournament.
According to Tan, there are already six teams that have confirmed participation. Two are from Cebu – the Cebu Landmasters-Bogo City and the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala team – which will be based in Cebu City.
