City reopens newly improved Athletic Bowl

AFTER being closed to the public for nearly two years, the City Government of Baguio reopens its newly renovated Athletic Bowl.

Getting a much needed facelift starting 2014, the nearly eight-decade-old city-owned sports facility unfolds its initial developments to local athletes with city officials led by Congressman Nicasio Aliping gracing the opening, Friday morning.

The ceremonial opening also held a 5,000 meter fun run activity made to formalize the use of the sports facility for the upcoming Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet early this coming February.

“This dream of the city has now been realized. I congratulate the people of Baguio because without their mandate, this improvement and rehabilitation would not come to reality,” Aliping said.

The first phase of the project started with rebuilding the dilapidated bleachers and the construction of the main stage way back October 2014.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) channelled an initial P14.7 million from its Annual Appropriations Budget to complete 75 percent of the main bleachers of the facility and by January 2015, another P50 million was infused for the second phase including the completion of the bleachers.

The second phase also included the reintegration of the running oval, refurbishment of the old drainage system, and the installation of the rubber tracks and perimeter fencing around the running oval.

In September 2015, another P50 million was approved by the DPWH to back up the third phase renovations that includes the reconstruction of the secondary bleachers and other proposed developments later this March.

Apart from the P114.7 million total funds from the national government, the city government also approved another P60 million supplemental budget to cover the final improvements by 2017.

The city is looking to standardize all of its sport facilities, particularly the five hectare landscape of Athletic Bowl area, before 2018 as the Summer Capital wishes to bid hosting the annual Palarong Pambansa.

Baguio is planning to install outdoor lighting to reinforce its function to house not only national but various international competitions.
