CanCham: Seniors in Canada ‘will need’ healthcare

THE aging population of Canada presents job opportunities for Filipino healthcare workers, specifically nurses and caregivers.

As the Canadian population gets older, it will have more retirees, which means Canada will need more new immigrants to sustain its economy and it will need healthcare workers to take care of this aging population, said Julian Payne, president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (CanCham).

Figures from Canada reveals that there are more seniors in Canada aged 65 than kids under 15, a phenomenon that puts pressure on Canada’s healthcare, labor and pension system. A report said that there were 5,780,900 Canadians aged 65 and older in July 1 compared to an under-15 population of 5,749,400.

Payne said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has placed emphasis on the issue of immigration, specifically making it easier for new Canadians to reunite with their families now living in Canada.

“I see this as an opportunity for Filipinos, especially those working in the healthcare system,” said Payne. He noted Filipinos with medical background and health and wellness services skills will have an edge in Visa approval in Canada as the country faces aging baby boomers.
