Lot owner gives P25T each to Mandaue fire victims

MORE than 60 house owners received P25,000 each from the owner of the property they occupied in Sitio Nangka, Barangay Ibabao-Estancia, Mandaue City yesterday, following a fire last week.

Barangay Captain Carmelino del Mar said the beneficiaries were the qualified homeowners who officially asked the lot owner to let them build houses there years ago.

More than 200 families were affected by the fire in Sitio Nangka, Barangay Ibabao-Estancia and Sitio Santo Niño, Barangay Guizo in Mandaue.

A six-year-old girl died after she was trapped inside their house in Sitio Nangka.

Families are staying inside tents put up near the fire scene.

Del Mar said the City and the barangay provided 12 tents, five portable toilets, 20 plastic drums, water for drinking and showers, and meals.

Initially, he said the owner of the property, the Amigo family, told the residents that they would use the lot about five months ago.

However, the residents asked the lot owner if they could stay until April this year since their children are still in school.

Del Mar said the Amigo family earlier offered each family P10,000. Del Mar asked the property owner if they could increase the assistance.

“Despite what happened, the lot owner is willing to give P25,000 each to the 66 homeowners,” Del Mar said.

He told Sun.Star Cebu that those who did not ask permission from the lot owner to stay in the area will not qualify to receive the assistance.

Yesterday, the lot owner distributed the cash assistance to 66 families at the barangay hall.

The Mandaue City Social Welfare and Development Office (MCSWDO) distributed kitchen wares to the fire victims.

MCSWDO head Violeta Cavada said they also gave rice and canned goods to the families.

At least 206 families were affected by the fire. Of this, 116 are renters/sharers while 90 are house owners.

In Sitio Santo Niño, 19 families were affected.

Cavada said she will submit a report to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO). The CDRRMO will endorse it to the City Council for the passage of a resolution to give assistance to the affected families.

Cavada said P10,000 will be given to the house owners and P5,000 to the renters/sharers.

Del Mar said that Rep. Luigi Quisumbing (Cebu, 6th district) will also give P8,000 to the house owners and P3,000 to the renters.

Quisumbing also shouldered the funeral expenses of the girl who died.

Del Mar said the barangay also planned to give P2,000 each to the families.
