THE Mandaue City Government asked the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to give them time to release traffic advisories before the agency will continue the road works along A. Soriano Ave., and portion of the Plaridel St. in Mandaue City.
City Planning and Development Officer Florentino Nimor Jr. said DPWH earlier told them that the repair on these roads and the first Mandaue-Mactan Bridge will start on Feb. 1, a day after the International Eucharistic Congress.
The City Government has been expressing concern over the traffic impact of the repair of the first bridge and the upgrading of the Soriano Ave. and Plaridel St.
Nimor explained that the Soriano Ave. and Plaridel St., which is now named as D.M. Cortes St., will be closed for road concreting.
However, the works in these roads have not started yet.
Nimor said the repair of the first bridge has already started but this was not noticed by the public because rehabilitation has been done under the bridge.
“Huwat lang mi sa notice. We hope hatagan mi og ample time nga pahibaw-on ang mga tawo (We will just wait for the DPWH’s notice. We hope DPWH will give us ample time to release traffic advisories to the public),” Nimor told Sun.Star Cebu.
DPWH will complete the road works in four months, said Nimor.
In a previous report, the DPWH is spending P50 million to upgrade Soriano Ave., starting from the City Sports Complex and a portion of A. Plaridel St. up to the point where it meets A.C. Cortes St.
One lane
Nimor said DPWH will repair one lane at a time.
A steel bridge was already constructed by the DPWH at the back of the new Mandaue Public Market and City Sports Complex to be used for vehicles that pass Soriano Ave. going to first bridge.
Nimor said he prefers that private cars will pass the steel bridge while jeepneys may still pass to their regular route.
He said those who will take the Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge may still pass through Plaridel St.
He said they expected another meeting with the DPWH for the road concreting in Mandaue and for the repair of the first bridge.
