RIVALS Cebu City and Mandaue City came up with a classic game that ended in a penalty shootout, 3-2, in the girls futsal event of the 2016 Central Visayas Athletic Association at the Cemex Gym in Naga City yesterday.
The Niños walk away victorious after Mary Laela Borromeo, Lea Birondo and Trizza Musni converted their attempts, while Mandaue City’s Regine Nicole Chua missed a potential equalizer.
Arantxa Mari Trebol and Itsuko Maree Bacatan scored the two goals of Mandaue City in the shootout.
Mandaue City was leading in the dying minutes of the regulation game and were only minutes away from a victory, but the Niños dug deep on their bag of tricks and in the 39th minute Borromeo hit a miracle from 35 feet to tie the game at 3.
Katrina Rodriguez gave Mandaue the early lead with a first-minute goal but Cebu City got the lead back after Jan Reese Jumawan scored in the sixth and Musni hit the back of the net in the 11th.
But Mandaue City retaliated in the second half as Chua scored the equalizer in the 25th minute while Trebol’s gave Mandaue City the lead, 3-2, a few minutes later.
It was the second game for both teams in finals since Cebu City had a twice-to-beat advantage. Mandaue City won the first game, 3-2, to force a winner-take-all match in the afternoon.
In the first game, Cebu City drew first blood as Amber Villaflor connected in the 12th minute, while Trebol answered with her own goal in the 15th minute to tie the game.
Mandaue City took back the lead when Itsuko Marie Bacatan hit a goal in the 24th minute while Jumawan retaliated in the 32nd minute to make it 2-all. Bacatan scored anew in the 35th to give Mandaue City the win and force the second game.
Cebu City had a twice-to-beat advantage after winning all their assignments in the elimination round.
