Alvarez: Marriage equality

MARRIAGE is defined as the union of two individuals of the opposite sex – but as years gone, the same sex marriage has been accepted and recognized in other countries like the Netherlands and Belgium. However, the compelling arguments about the issue have been continually trending including the popular personalities who are publicly airing their opinions. Some of the opinions are acceptable while some are not.

Now, let me share with you the insights and views of students and professionals regarding same sex marriage.

Marriage indeed is a basic human right. According to Ms. Melba Irene G. Gabuya, RN, MN professor in a University, said same sex marriage must not be limited, solely in the Christian context specifically what are those stated in the bible that limits the gender factor.

The literal biblical interpretations only gives way to bigotry in prejudice. She also added that marriage is understood as the union of two people who profess and commit love for each other.

She also addressed that if the state constitutionally protects the family, same sex couples would also wish for the same privilege of building a family and protection from the state the same way.

Gabuya believe the issues must be understood in a deeper context that prods the state to also do its part in recognizing and protecting its people.

Alex Ivan Junefourth, for his part, a graduating college student said: “The laws of God were written a long time ago, we never know if there are any updates or revisions…but if God wills, it happens or it happens with consequences…of biblical proportions."

Meanwhile, Aira G. Ocampo, Grade 4 honor student shared the decision of those from the LGBT to enaged into same sex marriage is their right. The same way we were given the right to love and be loved.

There are three types of rights: karapatang konstitution, karapatang kaloob ng batas and karapatang likas.

Mr. A.V, a medical student in UP Manila, said he is not in favor of same sex marriage because it goes against the natural order.

He explained that the institution of marriage is geared towards forming families which are the basic unit of the society. Naturally, people of the same sex cannot generate children because of the lack of sexual, genital difference.

The debate against same sex marriage is already growing and remain unresolved until now.

Some feel it's a gender discrimination and inequality; some regard it as unconstitutional while some cries foul for treating them as second-class citizens, some believe it can lead to polygamous relationships that could put everyone's religious beliefs in doubt and some also believe it absolutely weakens the sanctity of marriage.

Obviously, the same sex marriage will remain as an issue in our society today and in the future.

Whether it is a conservative or a radical issue, we must embrace the fact that we all have different perspectives in life. As the saying goes respect begets respect. Fights cannot drive out fights, only love can do that!

What will happen to a nation that is yearning for peace when everyone begin conflict just for different beliefs? This is a threat not only for the sanctity and institution of marriage, but also the indifference that the issue brought to our society.

As such, we must handle different points of arguments from the perspectives of belief, faith and religion constructively. And ultimately, we must start by recognizing that there are three factors to consider in every issue: yours, theirs and the truth before the issue on same-sex marriage is settled.
