3 sporting events to spice up Pistay Dayat

LINGAYEN -- Three sporting events will add excitement to Pistay Dayat (Sea Festival) 2015 celebration showcasing the provincial administration’s vision to transform Pangasinan into a "center of sports development."

Provincial Sports Director Modesto Operania announced the staging of "Paboksing Ed Gulpo" (Boxing in the Gulf) dubbed as "6th Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. Cup" at 2 p.m. of April 29, and Beach Volleybelles competition on April 30 to May 1. Both will be held at the Capitol beachfront.

Skimboarding, the newest sporting event launched in last year’s Pistay Dayat merriment, will take off from April 27 to May 1. Anyone could try this sport -- which is like surfing -- for free at the Capitol beachfront from 8-10 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. on these days.

Operania said the inclusion of the three events to Pistay Dayat celebration manifests Governor Espino’s priority attention to sports development in the province, as he vowed to level up sports-mindedness among Pangasinenses, especially for the young generation.

“These sporting events are also expected to draw big crowd of sports enthusiasts in Pangasinan, in nearby provinces and tourists from all over the globe,” Operania added.

Promising boxers from various towns and cities in Pangasinan will display their prowess and stamina in various weight categories of the "Paboksing Ed Gulpo" that include: powderweight (36 kg.), paperweight (44 kg.), pinweight (48 kg.), flyweight (49-50 kg.), bantamweight (52-54 kg.), welterweight (54 kg.), lightweight (56 kg.) light welterweight (60 kg.) and middleweight (69 kg.)

Meanwhile, 12 duos (24 players) will battle in the elimination round in beach volleybelles competition on April 30. Winners will advance to the semifinals scheduled in the morning of May 1 when the top players will fight for the championship match in the afternoon.

The beach volleybelles competition –- to be held in partnership with Representative Leopoldo Bataoil -– will be joined by beach spikers from elite tertiary schools in the National Capital Region, namely, Philippine Christian University, Rizal Technological University and Mapua Institute of Science and Technology.

Other beach volleyball players are from Lingayen and Binmaley campuses of Pangasinan State University, University of Luzon, Local Government Units of Labrador and Lingayen and barangay Pangapisan of Lingayen.

The Provincial Government will award cash prizes and medals to the winners of the "Paboksing Ed Gulpo" while Representative Bataoil shall award cash prizes and tokens to the champion in the beach volleybelles competition. (PNA)
