Halal tourism in curriculum

HALAL industry players in Mindanao are lobbying for the inclusion of halal tourism in the curriculum of all tourism-related courses in a bid to introduce Halal practices seen as an emerging tourism driver.

Marilou W. Ampuan, chair of the Halal committee of the Tourism Congress and founder of Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce (MICC), said that a Halal Congress among academic institutions in Mindanao with tourism-related courses is set next month to kick start the move of including halal tourism in the curriculum.

“This Congress set next month in a bid to further strengthen the move of introducing and tapping the potentials of Halal tourism in Mindanao,” she said.

The Halal Congress slated on March 1 to 3 at the Apo View Hotel is organized by the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) with the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Mindanao Development Authority.

Louie Rodaje, Development Management Officer of Minda, for his part said that discussions during the congress will focus on how to establish Halal programs on the educational curriculum of the academes.

“During the congress, the drafting, developing and integrating the Halal tourism to the curriculum, identification of the role of the academe in the island’s Halal tourism and the research and development (R&D),” he said.

Meanwhile, Davao-based Universal Islamic Center, in partnership with the Mindanao Islamic Chamber of Commerce (MICC), is set to stage the Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Expo on April 22 to 24 this year at the Abreeza Mall of Davao.

The three-day event will be focusing on promoting the growing US $3.2 trillion Halal industry in the global scale.

Ampuan emphasized that the expo will further position Davao as one of the Halal hubs in Mindanao.

"We will be expecting over 200 participants to grace the event, mostly tourism industry players such as hotels and restaurants," she said adding that halal product producers and certifiers will also be invited.
