Mining ban approved on second reading

THE 17th City Council approved on second reading Tuesday the proposed ordinance rejecting mining operations in Davao City.

Section 5 of the proposed ordinance states that "no approval shall be granted or issued by the city through its Sangguniang Panglungsod to any person, natural or juridical, to undertake any and all forms of mining operation in any area within the territorial jurisdiction of Davao City, except rocks and mineral substances classified under the quarry resources."

With this, the proposed ordinance will disallow any entity to engage in any business involving mining operations within Davao City.

Anyone found guilty will be charged with administrative, civil or criminal cases with one year of imprisonment or a fine of P5,000.

The proposed ordinance will also require the City Environment and Natural Resources (Cenro) to implement information and education campaign among young citizens for awareness and vigilance.

The City Council is expected to approve the item on third and final reading next week.

Once approved, the law requires it to be published in a newspaper once a week for three consecutive weeks.

It will only take effect after 15 days from the date of the last publication.

Councilors Leo Avila III and Danilo Dayanghirang sponsors and co-sponsors the proposed ordinance, respectively. (ANC)
