Sports office seek alternative power for Athletic Bowl

THE Baguio City Sports Office (CSO) is trying to find alternative power sources to light up the newly renovated Athletic Bowl.

Following the sports facility’s access for the public, the CSO is already studying how to brighten the surroundings of the area to elevate security and safety for its visitors.

City sports development officer Gaudencio Gonzales told Sun.Star Baguio that the sports department of the Summer Capital is currently studying how to implement the project without additional expense to the city’s annual budget.

“This is one of our objectives in the CSO after officially opening the area for public use. Although there is already a proposed plan on installing giant flood lights in the future we are looking to give an immediate solution for the locals who are already using the facility,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales said the development is to look for similar adoptions such as the solar powered lamp posts currently found at the Baguio Cathedral grounds.

“Probably, we will try to suggest to the LGU to come up with the same solar post lamps seen at the Cathedral. With it, minimal lang ang dapat na ilabas na budget for the project at the same time to give the athletic oval a more decent look,” Gonzales said.

He said that if approved, lamp posts will surround the oval area to enhance the visibility of the running tracks, especially that its operation starts at 5 a.m. until 6 p.m.

“Importante na maliwanag rin ang oval kasi at present, only the main bleachers are properly lit. The giant flood lights if installed in the future will only be used for big events so paano naman kung sa regular daily activities lang which does not need that much generation of light,” he added.

Last year, the Department of Public Works and Highways-Baguio City Engineering Office estimated P25 million for the installation of four floodlights, which will meet the international standards to light the open field of the sports facility.

The CSO is also eyeing the use of solar heating system inside the swimming pool area. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
