‘More coal plants approved by government’

THERE are more than three dozens of coal-fired power plants that have been approved by the government, seen by an environment group to be a problem in the next three years.

Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc. (PMPI) chair Roldan Gonzales said in a press conference at the Bahay ni Tuding on Thursday that coal-fired power plants are sources of dirty and harmful energy.

Interface Development Interventions Inc. (Idis) executive director Ann Fuertes also said in the same press conference that even with the recent establishment of coal-fired power plants now, "we are still experiencing more brownouts than when we do not have coal-fired power plants."

Since coal-powered energy sources need to be maintained with the use of water, the organization is also pushing for the implementation of the water code system in the country.

As early as 2001, the group had been pushing for this to be implemented as a city ordinance, Fuertes said, explaining that they had questioned the implementation of the water code.

"We will convince the Davao City Government to push for it because we need to monitor our water," Fuertes said.
