TO keep the homeless off the streets, the Cebu City Government, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7, wants to give jobs to street dwellers in the city.
The Cebu City Anti-Mendicancy Office said they are targeting to endorse around 2,000 street dwellers to the DSWD so they can be hired in the different construction sites.
Using funds from DSWD, the street dwellers will be paid P363 per day.
“With or without experience, everyone can apply. It’s not necessary nga silay mangunay ug trabaho sa construction kay pwede ra man sila mag-assist pod (They don’t necessarily have to be the one to do the construction work, they can just assist),” City Anti-Mendicancy Office head Betty Ganub said.
Those who can apply for jobs are street dwellers who are at 18 to 50 years old.
Benefits
Aside from their regular salary, the workers will also be entitled to overtime pay for overtime work, and free accommodation within the construction site.
“This way, these street dwellers will not have to sleep on the sidewalks,” she said.
Since Monday, the office has been asking the barangays to submit to them a list of street dwellers in their respective barangays.
According to their own records, there were at least 2,000 street dwellers were in the city in 2015.
It includes 456 families or 1,573 individuals. They also recorded that there were 371 individuals in the streets that year.
Of the number, some 350 are between 24 to 29 years old, 291 are 36 to 41 years old and 249 are 30 to 35 years old.
In an interview yesterday, Ganub said City Hall will be the one to help the street dwellers secure and comply with the requirements so they will be employed.
She said the street dwellers are only required to submit their respective biodata and a barangay clearance signed by the barangay captain.
The barangay captain has to certify that the applicant lives in the their barangay.
Ganub said they already got approval to waive the two other requirements, which are the police clearance and birth certificate.
The deadline for the application is on Friday.
